Volunteer Kitchen Assistant

Role purpose

To support the preparation and service of food in a safe, clean, and efficient environment.

Key responsibilities

  • Assist with basic food preparation (washing, peeling, chopping ingredients)
  • Help with simple cooking tasks under supervision
  • Serve meals or portion food where required
  • Wash dishes, utensils, and kitchen equipment
  • Maintain cleanliness of kitchen and food prep areas
  • Follow food hygiene and health & safety guidelines
  • Support stock rotation and basic storage (e.g. checking dates)
  • Work as part of a team with staff and other volunteers

Skills & Qualities

  • Reliable and punctual
  • Willingness to learn and take direction
  • Good teamwork and communication
  • Basic organisational skills
  • Positive, respectful attitude toward others
  • Ability to follow instructions carefully (especially around hygiene)

Training & Support

  • Induction provided
  • Basic food hygiene training

Time Commitment

  • Flexible shifts (e.g. 2–4 hours per session)

Working Conditions

  • Fast-paced environment at busy times
  • Standing for extended periods
  • May involve lifting light to moderate items (e.g. food boxes, trays)
