Volunteer Barista

Role Purpose

To prepare and serve drinks and light refreshments while creating a welcoming, friendly environment for customers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare and serve hot and cold beverages (e.g. coffee, tea, specialty drinks)
  • Operate coffee machines and basic kitchen equipment (training usually provided)
  • Provide friendly and helpful customer service
  • Handle basic transactions (cash/card, depending on setting)
  • Maintain cleanliness of the café, including workstations and seating areas
  • Follow food hygiene and safety standards
  • Restock supplies and assist with basic inventory
  • Support the team with general café duties

Skills & Quality

  • Friendly, approachable, and reliable
  • Good communication and teamwork skills
  • Willingness to learn (no prior barista experience required in most volunteer roles)
  • Basic numeracy (for handling payments)
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Attention to cleanliness and hygiene

Time Commitment

  • Flexible shifts (e.g. 2–4 hours per shift, weekly or occasional)
  • Weekend or daytime availability may be preferred depending on the organisation

Training & Support

  • On-the-job training in drink preparation and equipment use
  • Food hygiene and safety guidance
  • Ongoing support from supervisors or café managers
